About CompTIA

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a trade association, non-profit organization, was created in 1982 as the Association of Better Computer Dealers, Inc. (ABCD) by representatives of five microcomputer dealerships. In the course of a decade, ABCD laid the groundwork for many of CompTIA's initiatives and member benefits.

ABCD later changed its name to the Computing Technology Industry Association to reflect changing role of the association in the computer industry and the outlook for the U.S. Trade General The year 1990 was a period of growth as the association has expanded the scope of its activities to meet the needs of the computer industry expansion. Its initiatives increased to include networking, UNIX, images, mobile computing and multimedia arenas.

In an effort to monitor and take positions on public policy issues, the association has added a full-time director of the public policy position. In 2010 , CompTIA adds a new executive director for a new appointment "Creating IT Futures " Foundation, the philanthropic arm that focuses on training and certification of low-income students and adults in IT , as well as returning veterans and help connect with a potential employers.CompTIA is a provider of professional certifications in information technology ( iT) . Controversy

For over ten years, sold its flagship CompTIA A +, Network + and Security + certifications as a valid document for life. In January 2011, however, CompTIA has changed the status of these certificates that expire every three years. Under this proposal, graduates would have to re-sit exams or pay an annual maintenance fee for a system CEU (Continuing Education Units). Some members considered certified that this action violated the terms of the original contract with CompTIA and shown to effectively deny change agreement. Less than a month after this announcement, CompTIA reversed its decision. Under the new policy, only certificates received January 1, 2011 must be renewed every three years, however, a certain amount of hours to use the documented oriented certification is automatically renewed.
